Answer the following questions:

1. Tell me about Shirley.

  • Her background as a person and as a student
  • What is she good at?
  • What are her difficulties?
2. “The task of writing researched papers that express original arguments presents many difficulties”(Kantz, 1990, p.75).

  • Tell me what the author means by this quote
3. Tell me about Alice.
  • The difference between her and Shirley
  • What kind of advice did she give Shirley?
4. Tell me about Time Based Organizational Patterns (TBOP). How does Kantz explain it in the following quote?

“The writing version of Shirley's problem, which Flower calls "writer-based prose," occurs when Shirley organizes what should be an expository analysis as a narrative, especially when she writes a narrative about how she did her research” (Kantz, 1990, p. 78).

  1. 4. When students refer to articles as stories, they are reinforcing what Kant'z (1990) calls reading for plot and character. These time based organizational patterns set up transitional devices like the one's below.
Example: My first point. My second point. In conclusion.

    - Shirley, a novice writer, according to Kantz, the problem with the way students like Shirley approach research is that they are not reading rhetorically, or as inquiry, and thus fail to develop an actual argument.
    - She's good at writing essays through her own personal experiences.
    - Shirley has trouble to express herself when the research paper has their own original argument presented by the author.
    - "Although Shirley seems to have everything going for her, she experiences difficulty
with assignments that require her to write original papers based on textual
    sources" (Kantz,1990,p.75).
    - Many students have trouble expressing themselves when the research paper had their original argument, Kantz argues that students were never taught to analyze and synthesize material correctly.

  4. Group 2: According to Kant'z (1990) It is easier to quote that to paraphrase, and it is easier to build the paraphrases, without comment or with random comments, into a description of what one found than it is to use them as original argument. It is easier to use whatever one likes, or everything one finds, than to formally select, evaluate, and interpret material.

Alice's task is much more sophisticated than Shirley's. Shirley replied, "That would take me a year to do! Besides, Henry was a real person. I don't want to make up things about him." "Well," said Alice, "You're dealing with facts, so there aren't too many choices. If you want to say something original you either have to talk about the sources or talk about the material. What could you say about the material? Your paper told about all the reasons King Henry wasn't expected to win the battle. Could you have argued that he should have lost because he took too many chances?"

About Alice; Alice understands both sides of facts and opinions the only she understands in the differences of the two are how the audience receives them.

The difference between Alice and Shirley is Shirley goes more into to detail and wants to show facts for both facts and opinions she wants to makes sure that what she looks up in the right information.
